The demand from local authorities for the NDP grant fund has been enormous thus far. In fact, National Treasury has received over 650 applications so far (June 2008) from municipalities. In an effort to be as flexible as possible and to allow each local government to be innovative in putting forward project proposals in each area, the criteria were deliberately very simply outlined. Due to the volume of applications, evaluation of the applications necessitates a more thorough process than originally planned.
